Psychological Nurse Therapist

Helen Wilson

Helen is a psychological therapist specialising in therapeutic parenting interventions, with a special interest in attachment, trauma and family systems. She works with parents to build on strengths and to develop reflection and problem solving skills to reduce children’s social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Helen believes all people, even in adverse situations have the capacity to change and affirmation and appreciation of strengths is key to supporting this. Empowering parents to create sustainable change and build foundations where children can flourish is central to her practice.

She has over 15 years’ experience working in NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and Children’s Learning Disabilities Services and is one of the only ‘Incredible Years’ accredited Peer Coaches within the North East and an accredited Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) Practitioner.

Helen is an experienced clinical supervisor and a well-established practitioner within her field. The therapies Helen offers are evidence-based and highly recommended by The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and The Early Intervention Foundation (EIF).

She has an MSc in Nursing Studies (Learning Disabilities) from Teesside University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Evidence-based Parenting Interventions.

Patient Testimonials

“I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr Stephen Westgarth without hesitation. My 6 year-old daughter was diagnosed with Selective Mutism which requires a very delicate approach, and I am happy to say that after 18 months in Dr Westgarth’s care she has now been discharged and is talking freely in all situations. During our first consultation my daughter spoke in front of Stephen, although not directly to him – at the time this was a feat in itself, and speaks volumes about the man beyond his role as a doctor. From that point on I was sure that we were in very good hands. His manner was calm, approachable, structured and determined. He was absolutely meticulous in his approach to treating my daughter and we will never be able to thank him enough.”
